A New-York Christmas (1): Island of Misfit Toys

I spent my study period in New York, staying at a good friend's from SciencesPo. I had planned to do all sorts of touristy stuff, but in the end, my first day was almost only about Christmas illuminations and giant toy stores. So, after the unsettling experience of lights, and noise, and giant billboards on Time Square, during I felt very much like a wide-mouth small town girl, I embraced my inner 8 year old self and found shelter in Build-a-Bear. It was my first time visiting their shop, though I had heard of the concept on the Internet.

I was amazed by the diversity of outfit and animals available. This is the swaggiest plush monkey I have ever seen.

They even had Santa's reindeers!

And the impossible to avoid Frozen paraphernalia. I loved that beyond Anna's Folk dress, and Elsa's infamous Let it Go icy gown, they had Olaf's Hawaian shirt.

But I have to admit, I found the unstuffed "skins" super creepy.

Plush penguins had their own little ice floe. Adorable.

The friend hosting me and I went to see Matilda the Musical on Broadway and afterwards, we went to Toys'R'Us onTime Square. Even in my wildest dreams I would never have thought toy stors could contain ferris wheels inside of them and be opened till midnight and 1am on week-ends before Christmas. It was insane, and I felt very much like a kid on Christmas Eve.

The Furbies's descendents have super creepy eyes.

So we casually walked by a giant animated dinosaure...

Giant Gummibärchen lollipops!

And since everything was giant, giant Playmobils.

And pretty dollies. Of course.

#KeepTutoring

"I'd rather do my homework under the desk than on it". C., 3rd grade.
Every Monday, I spend the afternoon tutoring 3rd to 6th graders at the William H. Lincoln Elementary School in Brookline. I love my kids, whether my mission of the week is helping with multiplications, hearing a recitation on pilgrims, discussing Lois Lowry's The Giver, playing four-square, watching a musical on YouTube or writing with them their very first poems. I keep track of their funniest or most surprising quotes with the hashtag #keeptutoring on Facebook. Whether it's because they think "WWI was some stuff that happened in 2011" or "I'm not allowed to play with a skipping rope because it's too dangerous. Someone might get strangled.", there is always a new motivator about helping them do their best in school and learn about the world around them.

I have two team members. Here is Melody, working with E., a math genius with penmanship troubles. Many of the children in our program have special needs and IEPS and it is definitely challenging, especially since as volunteer aids, we don't have access to their files. But we do our best with the support the school staff can give us: we are definitely learning as much as the students are here!

And here are Kristen and G.

Finals are over and I'm back in France with access to a decent computer. So buckle up, we've got some catch up to do !

Even thoughI'm not a child anymore, we still celebrate Saint-Nicholas in my family (it would be impossible to not do so when you live near the Belgian border). So, my mom sent me a parcel! Saying that I was over excited about it would be an understatement !

It was full of winter goodies like a pompom bonnet and scarf set, Christmasy socks, bunny knee-socks, St-Nicholas chocolates, a book set in my home region during WWI, perfume, a black bow for my hair and a CD from my favourite harpist:singer Cécile Corbel (even though I realized afterward that without a recent computer, I had no device to listen to it). Am I not spoiled?

And of course, it contained THE St-Nicholas present: gingerbread in the shape of the Saint and his donkey. I enjoyed a bit for breakfast and shared the rest at lunch with other nostalgic Europeans and curious foreign friends.

Clarissa and Daphne at the "Paris Creperie Restaurant"

So the crepes actually werent that French tasting, but they wee good in their own way and we had a fun night.

Im not convinced adding solid stuff to the batter isnt a sacrilege but Lorin's Graham crackers apple pie crepe was actually good.

Tons of punny crepe names !

Lorin and I.

Roadtrip Thanksgiving (4) : Santa Parade - Back to Beverly, MA

Last Sunday, I spent my last day in Beverly watching the Santa Parade, a tenderly "Small Town America" event where everyone, from giant mac'n''cheese to vintage firefighter trucks, could march. A fun and heartwarming moment.

As Damien would say, this car has very clearly been "freedomized".

Note the skeleton in the passenger seat.

No Holidays parade would be complete without a delicious Ugly Christmas Sweater...

... or some very Christmasy ties.

Still unsure about why this was in the parade... but it sure was fun!

Beverly's biggest frennemy Salem High School (yep, the one from the witches) marched in order and played excellently.

Don't they look like a row of tin soldiers from the Nutcracker? Marching bands are really huge in the US, but their uniforms crack me up. I think I'd hate playing flute with my gloves... although they might  come in handy when it's cold.

In France, free massonery is secretive and at the heart of endless conspiracy theories. Here, they just parade when a debonnaire elk as an emblem and kindergartners in their car...

Hockey coach Chubacka.

Cutest Christmas tree costumes ever for these adorable boy scouts!

Someone isn't happy in their tiny red wagon, another quintessential bit of American childhood.

Little Women mailbox!!
And then it was time to say goodbye to the S,, Emily and her little sister Nikki (pictured above with the Beverly High School marching band).

Nikki and the always loyal Charlie.
