| The National Museum of American Jewish History is free all February. It's a great experience, with plenty of interactive displays presented in chronological and thematic order, and lots of different medium used to reflect on the history, culture and current lives of American Jews. One of the things I loved? This was finally a space where religion and nationality were not opposed, but on the contrary, were working together to create one unique, rich identity. This gave me hope that we can do better in France too, to stop antisemitism without making feel French citizens who are Jewish that they will only ever belong in Israel and should flee there. The Museum didn't gloss over difficult periods where being American and being Jewish seemingly didn't work together, but I loved the feel it crafted all along, though I am notsure how to perfectly express it. |
Membre de la Smithsonian Society, le National Museum of American Jewish History est quasi flambant neuf, et surtout, gratuit pendant tout le mois de février. Fiona et moi avons décidé d'échapper au froid de manière agréable en y passant une heure. Un peu frustrant parce que pas assez pour tout découvrir, mais tout de même très intéressant. Loin des idées à la mode chez certains actuellement, comme quoi tous les Juifs du monde devraient se précipiter en Israël, j'ai trouvé un musée à la fois rigoureux historiquement et très vivant, désireux de montrer que la culture américaine juive est en constante évolution, un résultat d'émigrations passées, d'expériences communes avec des citoyens américains d'autres confessions et de pratiques présentes. A l'intérieur, donc, une exposition chronologique pleine d'objets, de panneaux explicatifs, de scénettes interactives, de petits films, d'objets à manipuler pour les enfants et de nombreux espaces permettant aux visiteurs de laisser eux-aussi une trace. Vraiment chouette.
