Une matinée à tuer dans New-York ? Marisa et moiavions décidé de retourner au Met et évidemment, j'ai voulu explorer en premier leur Costume Institute. Souvenez-vous, en décembre, ils avaient une exposition sur les costumes de deuil. Cette fois-ci, le thème était la Chine, telle qu'elle fut réellement historiquement, et telle qu'elle fut rêvée et réinventée par l'Occident. Magique.
I can't resist Met Costue Institute exhibits. This one put traditional and historical Chinese costues side by sides with Western haute-couture and cinema costumes inspired by China.Clever and magical.
This Dior ensemble is one of my personal favourites from the exhibit. Embroidery details are magnificent,the yellow silk looks like the sun and it's a perfect call back to the pieces it was inspired of.
Those interested by issues of art and cultural appropriation might want tovisit the exhibit in person, so they can read more about what the curatores wanted to do exactly,and to compare, admire and form an opinion bythemselves. This is very much the kind ofexhibit that can be admired through very different angles, from political, ethical or anthropological reflexion to simple dream and admiration of the sheer beauty of the pieces. I personally think it would be a shame to loose either the intellectual or the artistic/esthetic layer of it.
Et pour conclure, Tonton Noug' a évidemment une chansonnette jouant elle aussi sur beauté, culture, notions d'exotisme et stéréotypes :
